From Small Beginnings to Big Dreams: How I Built My Perfect Art Studio

Building my dream art studio has been one of the most fulfilling journeys of my life. Just three years into starting my art business, I took the leap and built a 700 sq ft studio that has become my sanctuary. As I sit here writing this, surrounded by all the things I imagined, I am filled with gratitude, love, and joy.

When I first started Junior Designs, I transformed a small guest room in my house into my first studio. At just 12x10 feet, it may have seemed tiny, but it was everything I needed to get started. That little room was where I poured my heart into my art, experimenting with colors and techniques, and dreaming of what could be.

After my first year, I began to think bigger. I visualized becoming a successful artist, achieving my goals, showcasing my work globally, and earning respect in the art world. But I knew that big goals required bold moves.

I had to push myself out of my comfort zone and embrace the idea of a larger studio space. It felt uncomfortable to dream that big, but I forced myself to do it because I believed in my potential. Every week, I opened my goals journal and wrote about the studio I wanted to build. I even sketched floor plans, noting where everything would go, from the sound system to a mural wall. Looking at those sketches, I would tell myself, “I’ll get there.”

Growing the art passion

As 2023 rolled around, everything started aligning. Projects were flowing, my business was growing, and I realized that my little studio had reached its limit. I needed a bigger pot to grow new roots. So, I made the decision: if I wanted to manifest this dream, I had to take action.

Finding the Right Architect

The first step in my journey was to find an architect who could help bring my vision to life. I spent hours researching and interviewing professionals, seeking someone who understood my artistic vision and could create a functional space.

After several meetings, I found the right architect who resonated with my ideas. We discussed my sketches and concepts, and he helped me refine them into a structurally sound plan. It was exhilarating to see my dreams take shape on paper, and I felt a surge of excitement as we finalized the layout.

With the plans in hand, I knew I was one step closer to making my dream a reality. But one major hurdle remained: funding.

Securing Funding

In June 2023, I discovered the Beyond Open Grant, designed to support small businesses in Charlotte. I knew immediately that I had to apply. The grant would provide critical funding to help cover the costs of my new studio.

I spent days perfecting my application, pouring my heart into every word. I wanted the selection committee to grasp my passion for art and my vision for the studio. Two months later, I opened an email that would change everything: "We are pleased to inform you that you’ve been accepted."

I couldn’t believe it. I must have read that email ten times before letting out a scream of pure joy. This was step one, and the grant covered about 20% of the project costs— a significant boost that could help turn my vision into reality.

The Construction Process

With funding secured, it was time to break ground. Watching the construction process unfold was both thrilling and nerve-wracking. I visited the site regularly, eager to see the progress and ensure everything was going according to plan.

The construction team worked diligently, and I was amazed at how quickly the structure began to take shape. Walls went up, windows were installed, and soon enough, I could envision the vibrant space I had dreamed of for so long.

During this phase, I learned the importance of communication and collaboration. Every decision, from the type of flooring to the lighting fixtures, required careful consideration. For example, I chose eco-friendly LEDs that consume 75% less energy than traditional bulbs, balancing aesthetics with sustainability.

Designing the Interior

Once the structure was complete, it was time to focus on the interior design. This part excited me the most! I wanted my studio to reflect my artistic style while being functional for my work.

I spent countless hours researching color palettes and furniture. My goal was an inspiring and comfortable space where creativity could flow freely. I chose a bright, energizing color scheme that complemented my artwork.

Moving In

As I unpacked my supplies and set up my workspace, I reflected on the journey that brought me here. From that small guest room to this expansive studio, every step had been worth it.

I arranged my art supplies, hung my favorite pieces on the walls, and created a cozy corner for relaxation and inspiration. The studio was finally coming together, and I could already feel the creative energy buzzing in the air.

Embracing the New Space

Now that I’ve settled into my new studio, I’ve gained a wonderful sense of freedom. The extra space allows me to experiment with larger projects and explore new techniques without feeling constrained. I’ve started hosting workshops and inviting fellow artists to collaborate, which has been incredibly rewarding.
